About Metropolitan Opera

The New York Metropolitan Opera opened in 1966 on Broadway at Lincoln Square on the Upper West Side of Manhatten. It replaced the original Metropolitan Opera House which was built in 1883. The latest opera house has a seating capacity of approximately 3,800 and considered one of the largest opera houses in the world.

Metropolitan Opera History

The Metropolitan Opera has a long history of attracting large audiences to see outstanding performances. On October 22, 1883, they had its grand opening and performed Gounod’s Faust.

Unfortunately, the company struggled in its first year. Under the direction of Henry E. Abbey, the company had a $600,000 deficit which resulted in management being passed on to its conductor, Leopold Damrosch. After a few years, the company started to improve. In 1892, a new program was created which balanced German, French, and Italian classical operas. This attracted numerous world-class artists from around the world creating the Met’s “Golden Age” (1898 to 1903).

The Metropolitan Opera was privileged to host the first arranged performances of Richard Wagner’s Parsifal. This piece was never played outside of Bayreuth, Germany since that time.
Today, the Metropolitan Opera is the largest classical music organization in North America. More than 27 different operas perform each year between September to May. The operas are scheduled in a rotating repertoire with up to seven performances of four works each week. Both classical staged productions and modern conceptual designs are featured at the Metropolitan Opera.

In 2008, nearly 1,000,000 Metropolitan Opera tickets were sold, bringing in a gross of $13.3 million from North Americans and $5 million from international attendees.
