Newcastle enter 2026/27 with Eddie Howe under genuine pressure to deliver, after a disappointing 12th-place finish in 2025/26 that tested supporters' patience and left the manager himself admitting he "hadn't been up to the task." Despite the setback, the Public Investment Fund backed Howe to continue, in contrast to how other clubs treated managers following similarly difficult campaigns.

It's been a summer of significant transition on Tyneside, with key departures including Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali, and continued uncertainty over Bruno Guimarães' future, as the club embarks on a deliberately younger, more sustainable rebuild around emerging talents like Ewen Jaouen and Bazoumana Touré. European commitments add a further layer of demand to the campaign, with the squad also needing to strengthen at right wing, centre-back, striker and goalkeeper.

Newcastle open the new season at home to Liverpool on Sunday 23 August, an early opportunity for Howe to answer his critics and show his rebuilt young squad can compete with the division's best from the very first weekend.
