The 104th Arena di Verona Opera Festival opens with a historic first — Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, marking the bicentenary of his death, rather than an opera. The season brings the long-awaited return of full-length ballet to the Roman amphitheatre after 34 years, with a new production of Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet, alongside five opera productions in a summer built on Verdi: Paul Curran's La Traviata, Stefano Poda's Nabucco, and Franco Zeffirelli's celebrated Carmen, plus Aida in two productions — the historic 1913-inspired staging and Poda's centenary "crystal" edition. The season closes with star turns from Jonas Kaufmann and a double-date Roberto Bolle and Friends gala, plus Orff's Carmina Burana under the open summer sky.
