About Elbphilharmonie Hamburg

The Elbphilharmonie, popularly nicknamed as the “Elphi,” is a cultural landmark in the district of Hafencity located in Hamburg, Germany. This world-class concert hall opened its doors on January 11, 2017. 

Built on the banks of the Elbe river, the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg is a breathtaking architectural achievement with memorable acoustics within the concert hall. There are more than 1000 curved glass panels that were tailor-made to capture and reflect the natural colors of the sky.

Designed by Swiss architects Herzog and de Meuron, the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg’s glassy construction resembles a hoisted sail, iceberg, or quartz crystal. It takes up 20,000 square meters and reaches 108 meters (354 ft.). To date, the Elbphilharmonie is the tallest building in Hamburg, marking it as a monumental architectural spectacle to be enjoyed by locals and tourists. 

Seating at Elbphilharmonie Hamburg

At the heart of the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg is the Grand Hall with a seating capacity fo 2,100 people. It uses a “vineyard” style where artists and orchestras perform in the center of its 360° seating. 

The smaller concert hall, called Der Kleine Saal, holds 550 people and provides intimate performances for solo events, jazz, and chamber music.
