La Scala's 2026/27 season opens on 7 December with Verdi's Otello, marking Myung-Whun Chung's debut as the theatre's new Music Director — a role he assumes after decades of collaboration with the orchestra, chorus, and Milanese public. Chung inaugurates the position with two major Verdi titles, Otello and Macbeth. Under superintendent and artistic director Fortunato Ortombina, the season comprises thirteen opera titles across roughly 95 performances, with three works never before staged at La Scala, four conductors and four directors making their house debuts, and a deliberate mix of established maestros alongside emerging talent and new voices. Beyond opera, the dance programme brings back Balanchine's A Midsummer Night's Dream and Lacotte's Paquita, marks the centenary of Maurice Béjart's birth with a tribute including L'Oiseau de feu, Boléro, and the La Scala premiere of Serait-ce la mort?, and opens a new collaboration with the Piccolo Teatro — celebrating its 80th anniversary in 2027 — through Mont Ventoux by the Kor'sia collective, performed for the first time by the company. The symphonic programme centres on two concerts led by Chung marking the bicentenary of Beethoven's death, alongside a performance of Bach's St John Passion conducted by Riccardo Chailly. With a new Music Director's debut, house premieres, and a milestone Béjart tribute all in one season, this is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched calendars La Scala has offered in years.
