About Opéra National de Paris

The Paris Opera, known in France as Opéra National de Paris, is the primary opera and ballet company founded in 1669 by Loui XIV. The first official name was the Académie d'Opéra which changed a number of times over the years.

Classical ballet is an integral part of the Paris Opera which is performed by the Paris Opera Ballet. Louis XIV, who was a dancer, established the Académie Royale de Danse to codify dancers for court.

Each year, the Opéra National de Paris presents more than 380 performances of opera, ballet, and other classical concerts. Over 800,000 people attend performances in Paris, with only 17% coming from abroad. On average, 94% of the seats are sold for each event, which makes Opéra National de Paris tickets highly sought after by classical fans.

The annual budget for the Paris Opera is around 200 million euros. More than 100 million euros from the French state and 70 million euros from box office receipts. This funding allows the company to support its permanent staff, which includes its orchestra of 170 artists, a chorus of 110, and the corps de ballet of 150 dancers.
