Santiago Calatrava's landmark opera house opens its 2026/27 season on October 2, 2026 with a new production of Bizet's Carmen, staged by Ted Huffman and conducted by Michele Spotti. The season brings a record four new productions — Carmen, Lohengrin, Simon Boccanegra and La clemenza di Tito, co-produced with Rome Opera, La Fenice, Maggio Musicale Fiorentino and Geneva's Grand Théâtre — alongside a programme spanning the Baroque of Riccardo Primo to the post-truth politics of Nixon in China. A landmark year for the house's vocal roster too, with Wagnerian heroine Lise Davidsen, Baroque queen Cecilia Bartoli, and bel canto star Lisette Oropesa among the season's leading voices, alongside Thomas Hampson and other company debuts.
