Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club, commonly known as Brighton, is a professional football club based in the city of Brighton and Hove, on the south coast of England. The club was founded in 1901 and has played their home games at the Falmer Stadium, also known as the American Express Community Stadium, since 2011.
Brighton initially played their home games at the Goldstone Ground, but in 1997 they were forced to sell the stadium due to financial difficulties. The club then spent the next 14 years playing their home games at various locations, including Gillingham's Priestfield Stadium and the Withdean Stadium in Brighton, before moving to the newly built Falmer Stadium.
The club has had a varied history, with periods of success and struggle. In the 1970s and early 1980s, Brighton enjoyed some of their most successful seasons, including reaching the FA Cup final in 1983, where they lost to Manchester United in a replay. However, the club also suffered relegation to the fourth tier of English football in 1996, and were close to going out of business in the same year.
Brighton's fortunes improved in the 2000s, with the appointment of Gus Poyet as manager in 2009 leading to a period of stability and success. The club won promotion to the Championship in 2011, and then to the Premier League in 2017, where they have remained ever since.
The club's nickname is the Seagulls, which reflects the coastal location of the city. Brighton's crest features a seagull and the motto "Albion," which refers to the ancient name for the British Isles. The club's traditional colours are blue and white, and their current kit is made by Nike.
Brighton has a passionate fan base, and their supporters are known for their creativity and enthusiasm. The club has a strong rivalry with Crystal Palace, with matches between the two clubs often referred to as the M23 derby, due to the motorway that connects the two cities.
